Aquaponics. Been looking into this a long time and it’s really an interesting concept. I’ve stopped eating meat at the moment but I am interesting in getting protein into my system from a home grown source. At least then I know what has gone into the animal and not all the antibiotics or chemicals to fatten up the animal. So this means that I can grow fish, probably tilapia in our warm weather and they seem to be an easy starter fish. But to go out and setting up a few thousand liter system would be pushing it even for me who likes to jump into the deep end. The solution is a little proof of concept aquaponics setup. I have some goldfish as the fertilizer producers and then I’m using a combo of lava rock and river stones. I listened to a podcast where they mentioned it and it just seemed to fit as they have already gone through the wear and tear stage in the rivers so they’re adapted to the system. I’ve kept the sizes of the rock on the small side and also added worms already to the system. For vegetables I am trying lettuce that likes a lot of water and also can handle shade as this setup is on the northern side of the house
I’m using a constant flood system as I couldn’t get the bell siphon to work with the little pump I have and the over sized tubing. Finding stuff in Israel is a bit harder than elsewhere so I have finally found 1″ pipe and this will be the next two beds I’ll use. Glad I have done the whole POC as I have now learnt that I must have the smaller pipes and will need a larger pump. This will probably one of the bigger investments would I get this working on a larger scale.
